I may or may not be looking to buy a second car to function as a DD/beater. I'm leaning towards MB W123 or W114/115. Mainly because there's a 4spd manual W115 for sale near me... Any of you have experience with the W114/115 chassis? Is it s reliable and amazing and bullet proof as people claim the W123 is?

pretty much the same. Great cars, but watch out for rust. Have had a few. Slow, smaller, but pretty damn rugged

Sweet! Thanks! I'm always on the lookout for rust as I currently drive an Alfa. Though it's been in the shop for the past month... ugh.

yeah go over the benz pretty good. If it runs and drives 100% it will remain reliable for a long time. Sometimes these things can go so damn long still going down the road with issues people dont take them into the shop or maintain them so often

I rocked this w115 240D 4sp for a couple years. Ultimate jalopy. Rusty, smoked, rattled, awesome as hell. Couldn't stop it, as long as you added a quart of oil every time you filled up. But alas, another car in a long line that I managed to let go. Great car and I'd get another one, but I personally prefer the style of the w123.

I've made the mistake of not doing a PPI before and never doing it again. what a nightmare.

Those aren't beaters, they're classics.

I guess that's what you get when you impulse purchase an Alfa and simultaneously feel bad for the owner... Oh well. It'll be running so much better if I ever get it back from the shop.

Right. But I refuse to buy a real "beater". I gotta be stylish, yo.

Especially at this point in their lives, they are likely more durable than reliable, if that makes any sense. Also, maintenance costs would seem high for a beater, but I'm super sensitive to that kinda stuff anyway.

Well I guess it's kinda of between a W123 or W115 and some sort of Volvo from the same time. Cheap, durable, easy to work on, more reliable than an Alfa, manual, useable, and they have to look good. I like the idea of mounting steel wheels to a W115 and adding some rally lights and mud flaps. I'm weird like that.

Nooope not weird at all that sounds incredible. Maybe even put on some coilovers and lift it like 1.5 inches? Or is that too far?

Only in the real of can I afford it! I would totally do that. Then I'd DD it. Why am I so impractical with what I DD?

But that's not even close to beater status. It deserves to be taken care of and improved/restored, not driven into the ground and scrapped.

I would never drive it into the ground. Perhaps beater was the wrong word...
